Everyone’s favorite image sharing app recently updated both iOS and Android versions of its app with new photo filters. Users of more in depth image editing tools will probably be right at home with the new tool set which features common image editing tools found in most image editing programs.

Instagram now offers 10 more filters.  These new tools are:

  • Filter Strength
  • Adjust
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Warmth
  • Saturation
  • Highlights
  • Shadows
  • Vignette
  • Sharpen

Additionally Instagram has also improved some of its existing tools:

  • Straighten
  • Border
  • Blur/Tilt Shift
  • Crop
  • Lux
  • Rotate
  • Simplified video uploads on iOS

These new tools will give Instagram users more power than ever before to edit their images and really make them stand out. Unlike the regular Instagram filters the new tools can be accessed simply by touching the wrench icon. This will bring up a scrollable menu with the new tools. Each tool can be tweaked via a slider to let the user use as much or as little filtering as they desire.

The new tools will certainly be welcomed by more advanced photographers looking for greater control over the effects they place on their photos. While the controls are also intuitive and easy enough to use for those just getting started with photography to easily improve their photos as well.

These new tools will also place Instagram in competition with the myriad of other image editing tools available on mobile devices. Many photographers used other apps with more controls than Instagram previously offered to improve their photos before uploading them to Instagram. Now with Instagram’s new abilities, that is no longer necessary in many cases, which is great for improved user work flow but not so great for the other image editing apps.

Have you tried the new tools? What do you think of them? If you use other image editing apps will you still continue to use them on the photos you upload to Instagram? Or will Instagram become your main app? Share your opinions, thoughts and most of all your lovely photos with us in the comments (or tag us on Instagram)!
