How a Logo Is Born
Your logo is the face of your business and the anchor of your brand. So how does something so important actually take shape? While every designer may work in their own way, there are 4 main parts of the process that they will use to help design the logo that your business needs.
1. Research
All good designers will start out by researching your company and industry. Research will help them understand what is important to your brand and what makes it unique. As part of their research they will also ask you for input and your own ideas about the logo design you had in mind as well as any influences you might like to see in your logo. Understanding that you want something luxurious and modern as opposed to traditional and conservative will help them start off on the right foot.
2. Initial Sketches and Mock Ups
After a designer has done their research they will start their sketching and mockups. Every designer and design firm will have their own methods that work best for their work flow. The general idea will be to create a rough draft of the logo to minimize the chances of spending hours working on something that doesn't match the brief. There will usually be some sort of review process between designer and client to ensure that the logo is progressing in the right direction before moving on to the next step.
3. Logo Development
The designer will refine their sketches and mock ups and develop the design into a refined logo. At this point there may or may not be a need for more revisions to the logo. Usually most changes are small, such as slight repositioning of elements, removing an element or changing colors or typography. However, sometimes changes are large. These large changes so late in the process can be avoided by clear communication in the initial phases of logo development.
4. Finalized Logo
Once you, the client, is happy with the logo the designer will finalize it. Your designer will produce the finished logo and any necessary files that they have agreed to provide to you. You, the happy client, will go on your way, fresh logo in hand ready to put it to good use as the representation of your company.
Designing a logo may seem simple, but it takes a designers understanding of design principles, creativity and an understanding of the brand that the logo will represent to achieve the perfect logo.
