[Infographic] The Past and Future of Social Media

The social media landscape has changed drastically from its early days. Social media has gone from being a teen fad to a legitimate marketing platform that serves businesses large and small every single day. Take a walk down memory lane with Total Customer and a look back at social media's past, as well as a look forward to the possible future of social media.

Most of the early social media pioneers have fallen by the wayside. Facebook, however, has managed to change social media forever. At only 10 years old it is ancient compared to the lifespan of most social networks. Myspace lingers today as well, but it has fallen far from its time on top of the social media throne. The modern social networks claim millions, or in the case of Facebook: billions, of active users.  In testament to the influence of social networks Americans claim that Facebook sways their opinion of purchasing products 47% of the time. Nearly 50% of their purchasing choices are influenced by their experiences on Facebook!

While Facebook enjoys the top social networking spot currently, there's no guarantee it will stay there forever. Perhaps this was the motivation behind its acquisition of WhatsApp.  Is the future of social networking messaging? It certainly seems like a possibility given the rising popularity of messaging apps.  After all, social networking in its simplest form is about interacting with other users.
