8 Tips to Create an Awesome Infographic

Infographics are a great way to make complex information easy to understand, to reach new audiences and establish your brand as an expert. However, not all infographics are created equal! Avoid some common infographic pitfalls and your infographic will be on its way to success.

1. Avoid Too Much Text

Infographics are inherently visually orientated. Let your graphics do most of the work getting your information across and use text sparingly. Walls of text have no place in infographics! Condense your information down into smaller text chunks and phrases.

2. Avoid Illegible Text

Text should be easy to read. Choose fonts that are legible and use font sizes that are large enough so most people can read it easily. If you are avoiding using too much text you should have ample room for your text.

3. Make it Entertaining

As with any content it’s of little use if your viewers aren’t interested in it. Your infographic should be informative but also entertaining enough to keep the attention of the viewers. You don’t have to go for a full on comic but your infographic should be able to keep viewers attentions.

4. Cite Your Sources

Where did you get your information from? Were the sources reliable? Include your sources on your infographic to show where and how you got your information. While you may not think it’s important it demonstrates that your brand is reputable and can be trusted. Your brand doesn't just make things up, it takes the time and effort to properly cite its reputable sources.

5. Add Your Branding

Chances are you are creating an infographic as part of your content marketing plan. Be sure to include appropriate branding in your infographic. Viewers should know who originally created the infographic and where they can find that brand.

6. Simplify

The core purpose of an infographic is to distill complex ideas and concepts into easy to understand images. Your infographic should be easy to follow, and explain the concept or information in a way that a viewer no matter their experience with the subject matter can understand it.

7. Use White Space

White space is your friend! You don’t have to (and probably shouldn’t) cram graphics and text into every nook and cranny of your infographic. White space gives viewers room to breathe so to speak, it also can help the design flow and direct your viewer’s attention. No white space can leave viewers overwhelmed or confused by the chaotic image they are viewing.

8. Make it Shareable

People love to share infographics. Make it easy for them to do so! Be sure there are social sharing buttons so your visitors can easily share your infographic. You also may want to include an easy to copy embed code so others can share your infographic as well and add their own insights to it.
