In keeping with the times, the audience metrics company Nielsen will be launching a pilot program in May to measure online TV audiences. The pilot program includes notable television companies like NBC, A&E, ABC, FOX, CBS, and AOL. This program will be in addition to Nielsen's partnership with Twitter. The Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings uses Twitter activity to analyze the popularity of a TV show.
Their new program will use the same methodology of their already successful Online Campaign Ratings. It will provide information such as audience gender, unique stream counts, and audience reach.The program is intended to help it's customers better understand the online audience.
While the pilot will be starting next month, Nielsen has already scheduled it for an official launch later in the year. The program represents a great leap forward compared to their traditional means of measuring television popularity based upon a small number of home based units and telephone surveys.
